The Blue Mountains has no long-run published climate station of its own. The nearest Grey County reference is Owen Sound at 330.4 cm a year; Barrie, across Simcoe, averages 223 cm and Toronto 121.5 cm — all Environment and Climate Change Canada, Canadian Climate Normals 1981–2010. Escarpment elevation and lake-effect banding mean local accumulation varies sharply over short distances, so treat these as the surrounding band, not a figure for your specific lot.

Chalets are not ordinary houses, and neither are their roofs

A lot of what we install here goes on chalets, second homes, and ski-country properties that sit empty midweek. That changes the problem. Nobody is on site to notice an ice dam forming, clear a valley, or catch a leak in the first hour. A roof on a part-time property has to be right unattended for months at a time, which pushes the specification toward fewer failure points: continuous panels rather than thousands of individual shingles, correct valley and snow-retention detailing, and a finish that will not need attention. Snow retention matters more here than almost anywhere else we work — a steel roof sheds efficiently, and above an entrance, a deck, or a parked car that is something to be designed for deliberately, not discovered in February.

How does a metal roof deal with ice dams up here?

Ski-country freeze-thaw is relentless, so this is one of the clearest practical advantages metal has here.
