Manufacturing matters · Ontario homeowners

Canadian-made isn’t a sticker.

It’s a warranty path. Canadian-manufactured metal roofing means your roof is profiled, coated, and quality-controlled domestically — with a real Canadian company backing the paperwork. In an era of acquisitions, plant closures, and 25% steel tariffs, where your roof comes from is a price-stability question, not a sentiment one.

What “Canadian-made” actually means.

There’s a difference between a product that’s sold in Canada and one that’s manufactured in Canada. Some brands maintain Canadian sales offices or distribution centres while the actual product is imported, profiled, and coated overseas. That distinction matters when you need warranty service fifteen years from now.

A genuinely Canadian-made metal roof means the steel is profiled, coated, and quality-controlled at a Canadian plant. It means full coil traceability — the manufacturer can trace any warranty claim back to the original production run. And it means North American warranty support with a real office, real people, and a real phone number.

No. 01

Manufactured in Canada

Profiled, coated, and quality-controlled at a Canadian plant — not just distributed or warehoused here.

No. 02

Full coil traceability

Every panel can be traced back to its original steel coil. Any warranty claim, the exact batch is identifiable.

No. 03

Local warranty support

North American warranty team with a real office and phone number — not an overseas entity with no Canadian service path.

No. 04

Direct supply chain

Brampton plant serves Simcoe County directly. No overseas middlemen, no import delays.

No. 05

No currency risk

Warranty claims and replacements handled in Canadian dollars through a Canadian company.

No. 06

Fourth-generation Canadian

Manufacturing in Canada since 1929. Nearly a century of continuous production and warranty backing.

No. 07

New + recycled steel content

Every Wakefield Bridge panel is made from a mix of new and recycled steel, and is 100% recyclable at end of life — asphalt heads for landfill.

No. 08

Decoupled from oil prices

Asphalt is petroleum-derived; its price tracks crude. Steel is a domestic commodity, priced in CAD — your quote is a contract, not a moving target.

The Canadian roofing manufacturing landscape is shifting.

The Canadian metal roofing manufacturing landscape has changed significantly in recent years — and not all of the changes benefit homeowners.

Some established Canadian steel roofing plants have closed in Ontario in 2026. At least one major Canadian roofing manufacturer was acquired by a European parent company, with their entire Canadian technical department laid off in early 2026. That means fewer local engineers doing takeoffs, fewer local representatives answering technical questions, and potentially weaker warranty enforcement for homeowners who chose those products.

Homeowners may not realise that the brand name on their roof no longer has Canadian technical support behind it. The logo looks the same, but the people, the plant, and the warranty infrastructure may have changed entirely.

Our supplier is different

Select Metal Roofing exclusively installs products from a fourth-generation Canadian family manufacturer established in 1929. Their Ontario plant is active, their technical team is Canadian, and their warranty is backed by a company that isn’t going anywhere. See the full product lineup.

How trade policy affects your roofing purchase.

Trade policy may sound abstract, but it has a direct impact on the price you pay and the reliability of your roofing supply chain.

A Canadian-manufactured roof is more price-stable and supply-reliable than an imported alternative. As tariffs and remission phase-outs take full effect through 2026, the cost advantage of imports is narrowing or reversing entirely.

Six questions to ask before you buy.

Before signing a contract with any roofing contractor, ask these. They pair well with our quote comparison checklist.

  • Where is the steel actually manufactured? (Not "where is the company headquartered?")
  • Is the coil Canadian-sourced or imported?
  • Does the manufacturer have a Canadian plant with active production?
  • Is there a North American warranty support team you can call?
  • Can they trace your specific roof back to the original coil for warranty claims?
  • Has the manufacturer changed ownership recently? If so, is the warranty still backed by a Canadian entity?
Canadian-made roofing questions

What homeowners ask about origin.

Does "Canadian-made" mean the steel is also Canadian?
The steel coil may be sourced from Canadian or international mills, but the manufacturing — profiling, coating, quality control, and warranty backing — happens in Canada. What matters most is that the finished product is manufactured domestically with full traceability and local warranty support.
Why does it matter where my roof is manufactured?
Warranty enforcement, technical support, and supply chain reliability all depend on having a real manufacturer presence in your country. If your roofing manufacturer is acquired by an overseas company or closes their Canadian operations, your warranty support path may effectively disappear.
Are imported metal roofs cheaper?
They may have been historically, but with 25% tariffs on steel derivative products and phasing out of import remissions through 2026, the cost gap is narrowing or reversing. Canadian-made products also avoid currency fluctuation risk and import delays.
How do tariffs affect metal roofing prices in Ontario?
Canada's 25% tariffs on imported steel derivatives (effective December 2025) and the phasing out of remission orders mean imported roofing materials face rising costs. Canadian-manufactured products are insulated from these import surcharges.
How can I verify if a metal roof product is actually Canadian-made?
Ask for the manufacturer name and plant location. A genuinely Canadian-made product will have a domestic manufacturing facility, not just a Canadian distribution centre or sales office. Your contractor should be able to tell you exactly where the product was manufactured.
Does Select Metal Roofing use Canadian-made products?
Yes. All our products are manufactured by a 4th-generation Canadian family company (established 1929) at their Brampton, Ontario plant — approximately 90 minutes from our Simcoe County service area. Every coil is traceable and every warranty is backed by a Canadian entity.
