Often — a layover goes over sound existing shingles and avoids a full tear-off. Whether it is appropriate depends on the condition underneath and how many layers are already there, which is a judgement made on the roof rather than over the phone.
How long does asphalt last out here?
13–17 years in this climate. That range comes from Colum’s own decade of surveying the roofs he tore off, not from a manufacturer’s stated warranty term. Exposure and freeze-thaw cycling are hard on asphalt, and open rural ground gives it no help at all.
